Walking Alone, Ted Harrison (2000), Acrylic on Canvas
Mount Baker, Ted Harrison (1993), Screen Print
Forest Portage, Ted Harrison (1984), Acrylic on Canvas

This week during our EDCI 307A (Art in the Elementary or Middle Classroom) class, we learned about beloved Yukon artist Ted Harrison. He became famous for his unique landscape illustrations. He used abstract shapes and colours to showcase life in the Yukon. We practiced recreating his style using our own photographs as reference. The focus of this lesson was storytelling through art and images, so we each chose photos that have significant meaning or sentimental value to us. Although this assignment was done using acrylic paint, it was an excellent intro to painting landscapes that I will definitely be able to apply to my Free Inquiry watercolour painting project in EDCI 336.

Key ideas:

  • Identifying main shapes from reference photo
  • Creating a line drawing prior to painting
  • Using shades of colour to represent depth
  • Experimenting with colour
  • Ignoring realism sometimes/taking creative or artistic liberty
